Merino Wool Base Layers

We use superfine 18.5 micron Merino wool for our Merino base layers, so they’re not itchy. They’re soft to the touch and feel great on your skin.

If you’re a Merino purist, you’ll love our 100% Merino wool Inversion base layers. They’re warm without adding bulk, and they’re only a bit thicker than our Aspect base layers. They feel a bit more like a wool layer you’re used to, while our Aspect base layers feel like a soft t-shirt material. If you tend to run cold, the Inversion base layers are perfect.

If you run warm or are moving more - backcountry skiing, winter running/hiking, etc. - our slightly thinner Aspect base layers are for you. If we’re grabbing a base layer for year-round wear, it’s the Aspect. These long sleeve shirts and women’s leggings work well as standalone layers to wear around town or to the office too.

Thanks to our (m)Force technology, the Aspect base layer tops and bottoms are more durable and longer lasting than our 100% Merino Inversion base layers while still providing a good amount of warmth.

For skiing and cold winter days, you’ll want a mid layer that adds insulation between your base layer and your winter jacket, ski jacket or ski shell.

For skiing, a Cloudripper Grid Fleece mid layer will keep you warm while still being breathable so heat can escape. Our 100% Merino wool Hyde hoodies and joggers add a lot of warmth over our base layers too. Our Alpha Jacket (coming soon!) works well as a standalone layer over a base layer all winter long.

For resort skiing on cold or stormy days, our 100% Merino wool Inversion base layers are perfect. They’re the warmest of our base layers while still being breathable, moisture wicking and temperature regulating.

For sunny, warm days or spring skiing at a resort, choose our slightly thinner Aspect base layers. These Merino-blend base layers are what we recommend for backcountry skiing and any activity where you’re breathing/working hard.

For daily wear in the winter for things like walking your dog or attending a sporting event, an Inversion base layer set works great.

Like most of the clothes we make, you can just toss your Merino base layers in the washing machine with your other clothes on a cold or warm wash cycle. We do recommend hanging them up or laying them flat to dry. This will help them last longer and avoid shrinking too.

Many of our customers and athletes have had their Merino base layers for 5+ seasons. It depends how often you wear them and how much friction there is when you wear them.

Our Aspect base layers (84% Merino, 16% nylon) tend to last longer than our 100% Merino wool Inversion base layers since they use our (m)Force Technology for added durability and recovery.

Merino base layers can be comfortably worn year-round, especially our more versatile Aspect base layers. We love them for backpacking trips with chilly evenings and mornings. The Aspect base layer top makes a great everyday long sleeve shirt to wear to work or at home too.

Since Merino wool wicks moisture, regulates temperature and breathes well, it works well even in medium and warm weather.
